Since Harrison Birtwistle emerged from the Royal Manchester College of Music alongside Peter Maxwell Davies a half century ago, his many ingenious, unique, and often outrageous musical creations have not generally been associated with chamber music. That may change with ECM's celebration of the recently knighted composer's 80th birthday in a program built around the first recordings of two substantial piano trios played by trending star violinist Lisa Batiashvili, cellist Adrian Brendel, and pianist Till Fellner. The single movement Piano Trio is the newer, more characteristic piece. Premiered in 2011, its 16 minutes of cumulative emotional and kinetic energy are the result of a series of increasingly frequent collisions between seemingly unrelated notes and chords, ending-unexpectedly-too soon. …
