Unusual pairing of instruments offers challenges galore

Few works for the combination of trumpet, cello, and piano exist. It's not hard to imagine why: the trumpet is a far louder instrument than the cello, and the three instruments' vastly different timbres and intonation systems present considerable ensemble difficulties for performers. It's interesting, therefore, to see the ways in which Eric Ewazen (b. 1954) addresses the challenges of this instrumentation.

In his introduction to the trio, he states his desire to create the sound-world of a "mini-chamber orchestra." In effect, the resulting texture seems more like a concerto for trumpet and cello soloists, with the piano in the accompanying role of an orchestra. …
