You've got the off-to-sleep routine down to a science-or so you thought. Suddenly your toddler's waking in the night, or resisting going down in the first place. A nightmare for you? Nah, you just need to wrest back a little control, says Deborah Pedrick, founder of the Family Sleep Institute in Stamford, CT. To start, reaffirm the old routine, since structure makes toddlers feel safe. You can allow deviations (water, a snack, another book) only very occasionally. If sleep struggles have escalated to intolerable, have a family meeting. Explain the repercussions of not sleeping: Mommy and Daddy are too tired to go to the park or play after work. Then formalize things. Draw up a sleep rules chart: one for your tot listing the agreed-upon routine; another for the parents, so you remember to play by your own rules. …
