To the Editor:

A recent piece ("Breakthrough a Bust?") explored whether the Breakthrough Prize would help attract students of color to science, engineering, and mathematics.

Prizes can and do have an inspirational effect on the general public. A recent review of the MacArthur Fellows Program found that it causes 10 percent of the engaged public, representing 12.9 million people, to take action in the pursuit of new, more creative activities and ideas.

I agree with others cited in the article that having prize winners with whom a young person might identify at a personal level is critically important in the inspiration process. That is why the MacArthur Fellows Program has always striven to represent the depth and breadth of American creativity. …
