Fundraiser Stands Up to a Dual Challenge

How do you make cancer entertaining? Ask Joel Gallen. The exec producer of the biennial "Stand Up to Cancer" telethon along with Gwyneth Paltrow, he must craft an hourlong program that's meaningful enough to elicit donations for cancer research - and compelling enough to keep viewers tuned in.

The Sept. 5 telecast will mark the fourth edition of the "Stand Up to Cancer" fundraisers that air as a block across the major broadcast nets and more than two dozen eablers. This year's show will be carried on a record 31 TV networks and be live-streamed on Hulu and Yahoo.

The telethon is hard to miss for anyone who is channel surfing that night, but Gallen noted that having the same program on so many channels underscores the importance of the cause.

"There are so many levels to making the show," Gallen said. "You have to get a serious message across, and be passionate about what this organization is doing. But at the same time, you're on every network, so you want to make sure that there's a good balance of entertainment. …
