Nominations Open for SPJ Board of Directors Seats

Leading a national organization like SPJ is tough. Hard decisions must be made. Priorities must be established and progress monitored. There's hands-on work to be done, phone calls to make and chapters to visit. Leaders must step back from their own local responsibilities and consider the entire organization and how it can better impact the profession.

While the work is challenging, the rewards are great. SPJ leaders hear from individuals who have been touched by the work of SPJ, see where their decisions have made the profession better, and gain a better understanding of the issues facing journalists and the industry. They determine how SPJ will carry out its mission to improve and protect journalism through programs like First Amendment advocacy, educational training, and the promotion of the highest standards of ethical reporting.

In the coming months, SPJ will elect 13 leaders to continue the Society's work. Terms will begin in the 2003-2004 year, which starts with elections at the Sept. 11-14 at the SPJ National Convention in Tampa, Fla.

The following board positions will be selected:

* President-elect (one-year term). This person automatically becomes president of SPJ the following year.

* Secretary/Treasurer (one-year term)

* Vice President of Campus Chapter Affairs (two-year term)

* Director At Large (two-year term)

* Adviser At Large (two-year term)

* Campus Representatives (Two seats; one-year terms). Positions include stipends to cover participation costs.
