On July 23,2014, Dr. William Adams was sworn in as the Endowment's tenth Chairman at a White House ceremony, with Vice President Joe Biden in attendance. He began his tenure the next day.

"The Endowment plays an enormously important role in the civic and cultural life of the country, and I am eager to help deepen the public's appreciation of the quality and impact of its work," said Adams. He comes to the Endowment most recently from his post as president of Colby College in Maine, where he spearheaded a $376-million capital campaign that resulted in a large expansion of the college's art museum and the creation of a center dedicated to the arts and humanities. Adams was president of Colby from 2000 until June of this year.

A native of Birmingham, Michigan, Adams went to Colorado College for undergraduate study in philosophy. …
