Large Employers and 'Skinny' Health Plans: Outlook for 2015

Nearly 1 in 6 companies plan to offer health coverage that doesn't meet the Affordable Care Act's requirements for value and affordability, according to a survey of 136 large employers by the National Business Group on Health.

Many thought such low-benefit "skinny plans" would be history once the health care reform law was fully implemented this year. Instead, 16 percent of large employers said they will offer lower-benefit coverage in 2015 along with at least one health plan that qualifies under ACA standards.

The results weren't unexpected by benefits professionals, who realized last year that ACA regulations would allow for skinny plans and even make them attractive to some employers, but the new survey gives one of the first looks at how many companies will follow through and offer them. …
