A Safe Learning Environment for All

SCHOOL SHOOTINGS, CYBERBULLYING, PREVENTABLE ACCIDENTS-WE'VE ALL SEEN THE NEWS STORIES on the effects of these tragic school events. As a parent, when I send my children off to school each day, I expect them to be safe, along with every student and the educators who serve them. Students learning and growing in a safe, positive environment is essential. But what does that mean?

We have to look at the whole educational picturecreating a learning environment that is safe not only physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. Such an environment involves administrators, teachers, parents and even students themselves working together to create a safe haven for learning. The theme of this issue of Techniques is "Creating Safe Learning Environments," and our goal was to explore just a few of the numerous aspects related to CTE's role in school safety.

On a physical level, lab safety is instrumental in creating a safe learning environment. CTE programs often have manuals, checklists, codes, regulations and procedures crafted to ensure safety in schools and labs. Instructors must ensure that safety practices meet state and federal regulations, and they must also teach the safety skills that will be critical in students' careers. …
