A new independent chief inspector of borders and immigration will be appointed before the end of the year after John Vine announced that he is to resign from the post, which he has held since it was created in 2008. He said that his decision to step down sooner than July 2015, when his term was due to end, would give Home Secretary Theresa May enough time to ensure a smooth transition. Vine said that he was proud of establishing the inspectorate, which had been 'a catalyst for significant change and improvement across the UK's border and immigration functions'.


Following a National Audit Office report in March that concluded it was likely that significant amounts of tax are lost through abuse of the system of tax breaks, auditors are to investirte reliefs with particular social or economic objectives. This inquiry will look at the number and range of tax expenditures and examine the effectiveness of their administration.


A consultation undertaken by a host of watchdogs on proposed reforms to the inspection of children's services will close on September 12. …
