NCEA Participates in Bearing Witness Summer Institute 2014

Bearing Witness, an annual summer institute sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the Archdiocese of Washington, the USCCB, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Georgetown University, and NCEA took place July 20-25, 2014. Bearing Witness aims to better inform Catholic school educators about Catholic-Jewish relations and the Holocaust.

Forty new and veteran history, literature, social studies, and religion teachers from 31 dioceses across the country made up this year's Bearing Witness class. Regina Haney, Ed.D., executive director of the NCEA Boards and Councils Department, gave the opening remarks. She challenged the class to use this experience to "see with new eyes."

The week-long program included lectures by Catholic and Jewish leaders, guided tours of the Holocaust Museum, visits to area synagogues, and a great focus on how participants could carry what they were learning into their classrooms. Institute participant Traci Borden, a native of Cleveland, Ohio and a middle school language arts teacher, was profoundly affected by a photo she saw at the Holocaust Museum depicting a Jewish man's execution. …
