Ouija Tops US Box Office on $20M

It may have been a slow session, but that won't stop Universal executives celebrating a number one berth heading into Halloween this week and top brass at The Weinstein Company feeling good about St. Vincent.

Ouija's estimated $20m debut saw the horror film finish one place ahead of Keanu Reeves revenge tale John Wick on $14.2m, of which $2.5m came from 347 Imax screens.

Meanwhile St. Vincent, the comedy starring Bill Murray and Naomi Watts, stormed nine places up the charts to land in sixth place on $8.1m following an expansion by The Weinstein Company from 68 sites to 2,282. After three weekends the running total stands at $9.2m.

Overall box office for the top 12 amounted to $102.7m, falling 15.5% against last weekend and dropping roughly 8% against the same session in 2013.

Last weekend's champion, Fury, slipped to third place on $13m for $46.1m after two sessions, while Fox's Gone Girl on $124.9m ranks fourth.

Laura Poitras' Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour arrived through RADiUS on $125,000 from five sites for a $25,000 per-site average. …
