If you've never heard throat singing before, prepare yourself for quite an experience: an accomplished throat singer can call on a range of tones and timbres that can border on the spectral. Tanya Tagaq is an Inuit artist from Canada's high Arctic regions and Animism, her fourth album, shows the musician in sublime and spectacular form. Think, perhaps, of some of Björk's further reaches or Sainkho Namtchylak - the latter another throat singer, though from a Tuvan tradition - and you are on the way to Tagaq's work.

But only halfway: for Animism, like Tagaq's previous recordings, is beautifully strange and special and it inhabits a world that encompasses the shamanic and the experimental in one mighty swoop. The album's 11 pieces employ instruments - strings, percussion, electronic beats - but the emphasis is on the voice itself. …
