A fund-raiser for the legal defense of incarcerated Palestinian professor Sami al Arian was held April 10 at the Georgetown University Intercultural Center. About 80 people attended the dinner and heard Georgetown professor Mark Lance-also of SUSTAIN (Stop U.S. Tax-funded Aid to Israel Now)-Howard University Imam Abdel Malik Johari, and al Arian's daughter Laila, Georgetown senior and former Washington Report intern, speak eloquently about the issue of political prisoners in the U.S.

Professor Lance and Imam Johari both focused on the history of political persecution in the U.S., including the Comstock opposition to the communist, anarchist, and women's movements of the early 20th century, the House Un-American Activities Committee of the McCarthy years, the persecution of civil rights and anti-war activists under Hoover's FBI and Cointel, and the present PATRIOT Act under Attorney General John Ashcroft.
