Achieving Our Goal

The current NSDC goal states that we will have high levels of learning for all teachers in all schools by 2007. There is just one statement that can be made about the goal: It's revolutionary! When achieved, it will change the face of education. As an organization, we are in for a fabulous adventure much like Dorothy in her journey down the yellow brick road to the Land of Oz. Like her, we will not be deterred by people who may question our ability to reach the goal, and like her, we won't be afraid to take risks to get there. We will take action, and we will get results that bring success.

There are ways of achieving our goal that we have not yet identified. There are breakthrough ideas out there somewhere. We will use horizontal thinking, come up with a variety of ideas that take us in new directions, and spread our current success to a new level of significance. One thing is a fact: We are uncertain but not unclear. We are uncertain about the specific steps that we will take to achieve our goal. We are very clear, however, about the reason that we are working on this goal and sure about who must be involved in the journey. We will reach our stated goal because each of us has made the organization's goal personal, determined that it is a priority in our daily lives, and consistently taken action related to it.

How can we make an idea this big work for each of us individually? Let's explore a way in which you and I can get involved in a process and then quickly move that same process to a larger number of folks. …
