The information in this department is provided by Information Resources Inc. (IRI), a marketing research and software company based in Chicago. The sales data on specific OTC and HBC categories are based on scanning data collected from drugstores, food stores, and mass-merchandiser outlets. IRI's data for this report are collected from a sample of 11,000 supermarkets, more than 7,500 drugstores, and 250 mass-merchandisers.

Sales in the laxatives category increased during the 52 weeks ending July 26, 1998, according to Information Resources Inc., Chicago. Total dollar sales reached $674 million, showing a 6.4% increase. Drugstore sales rose 2.9% to $333 million. Massmerchandisers racked up a bigger gain-12%. Their total dollar sales rose to $186 million. Food stores' sales increased 7.8%, to $153 million.

Total unit sales of laxatives increased across outlets by 4% to 121 million during the same 52-week period. Total unit sales climbed to nearly 53 million in drugstores, a 1% hike. …
