Is your school or district ready to develop an accountability system? Where can you turn for help? With no federal agency to assist states and school districts, two organizations have emerged as the accountability experts: the Education Commission of the States and the Southern Regional Education Board.

The ECS focuses on statewide accountability systems while SREB targets state and local systems.

Kathy Christie, director of the ECS information clearinghouse, says their state accountability systems are based on a generic structure. "With so much information available, states often don't know where to begin. So we've developed key issue packets to round out [accountability] so [educators] can figure out what to focus on."

Four ECS publications detail accountability systems from various state perspectives: Designing and Implementing Standards-Based Systems; A Policymaker 's Guide to Incentives for Students, Teachers and Schools; Education Accountability Systems in the 50 States; and State and Community Responsibility in Accountability.
