NOVEMBER 21 UPDATE: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 scores number one debuts everywhere as UK delivers $3.6M on opening day and Germany $2.9M.

Early numbers would suggest the YA adaptation is on fire as it rolls out on 17,000 screens across 85 markets this weekend in the biggest day-and-date launch of 2014 and the widest ever for Lionsgate's formidable international distribution platform.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 opened in nine markets on Wednesday (November 19) and a further 59 on Thursday, among them the UK where $3.6m including previews represented a 12% gain on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire by the same stage one year ago.

Germany produced $2.9m for an 11% gain and the best opening day of 2014 so far, while France has generated $3m after two days and a 10% hike on Catching Fire. The Belgian debut is 5% ahead.

Russia delivered the biggest 2D launch day of the year-to-date on $2.7m as Part 1 climbed 28% on its predecessor and Australia generated $2.4m for the best debut of 2014 so far.

Italy produced the biggest Thursday debut so far in 2014 on $877,000 for an 8% gain on Catching Fire, while South Korea claimbed 41%. Lionsgate International did not provide a number at time of writing.

The Latin American region is understod to have gained 40-55% on its predecessor, although numbers were not available at time of writing.

The film arrives in 17 markets on November 21 including Spain.

Catching Fire set off on its global journey almost exactly one year ago, scoring $146m from 63 territories including the UK, Germany, Brazil, Australia and South Korea. …
