July was another month of healthy recovery for the UK job market and ministers were quick to highlight a series of positive statistics.

Unemployment continued to decline, hitting 6.2%, the lowest level for six years, while the number of people claiming Jobseekers' Allowance fell below one million. Over the year to July, unemployment saw the largest annual fall for 26 years, dropping by 468,000. The employment rate - at 73% - was back at the level recorded before the recession hit.

With the number of people claiming the main unemployment benefit down below 1 million for the first time in 6 years, we are helping people to break free from welfare dependency, look after themselves and their families, and play their part in getting our country back to work,' said Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith.
