Acclaimed Tuareg guitar group's acoustic set is hypnotic and alien, yet familiar

On their latest, all-acoustic EP, the Tuareg guitar slingers of Tinariwen are unplugged, yet still wired to the sun, sand, and stars that nurture and inspire them. Political exiles from their Malian homeland, Tinariwen have exchanged one sacred desert (the Sahara) for another (California's Mojave) without significantly changing their tapestry of coiling Berber riffs and hypnotic, snaky song structures.

inside/Outside is the shadow twin to Tinariwen's electric 2014 collection Emmaar. By day, the guitarists recorded their "official" album in their studio in Joshua Tree National Park. At night, they picked up acoustics, went outdoors, and played around the campfire. The result is the intimate sound of creation captured on the fly. Strands of entwining notes kick off "Adounia tiChidjret." Floating on a loping rhythm, front man and founder Ibrahim Ag Alhabib's gravelly chantsong is answered by hushed hymn-like choruses. …
