Article excerpt

The following octavos are part of a collection entitled Worthy Is Christ: Selected Choral Works by Richard Hillert, published by OCP.

Festival Canticle: Worthy Is Christ. Richard Hillert. SATB, organ, and optional brass. OCP 30116972, $2.20. Here is a newly arranged octavo of one of the most popular compositions for Eastertide. The arrangement opens up many wonderful possibilities for processions on Easter Day through the addition of SATB vocal parts, descants, brass, and timpani. A cello/bass part is also available from the publisher. This piece could serve many roles during the Liturgy and is sure to become a staple in many choral libraries.

The Lord's My Shepherd. Richard Hillert. SATB a cappella. OCP 30127177, $2.10. Based on a not-so-popular traditional American hymn tune, HAPPY SOULS, Hillert blends the text of Psalm 23 with grace and dignity in this beautiful a cappella setting. The beloved text of the psalm is sung straight through, without a refrain, making this setting very appropriate for choirs to sing in both liturgical or concert settings. Musically, the choir is grounded, with the melody sung in unison, four-part harmonies, or in canon. This setting is also a perfect choice for choirs looking to expand their choral repertoire and choral techniques.

This Joyful Eastertide. Richard Hillert. SAB a cappella. OCP 30127175, $1.65. I particularly like this traditional text during the Easter Season-perhaps for a Sunday when the choir is back after a break! Hillert's arrangement is wonderful for choirs who might be lacking balance in the tenor and bass section. Each verse should be sung with long phrasing to complete the textual curve, as the altos and baritones layer under the soprano line. This piece certainly can offer a "quick and easy" opportunity for choirs to expand their Easter repertoire and choral sound. …
