Sam Kalmanowitz is totally committed to his community. "I've always felt it's important that I give something to the city in appreciation of people in the city being customers of mine."

When Meriden did a $23.5 million revitalization of its downtown area, Kalmanowitz not only served on the committee of five to oversee it, he was elected chairman. Then he served on the building committee for the new YMCA. He also finds time to visit the schools, talking on various subjects from drug use and abuse to entrepreneurship.

A registered pharmacist since 1961, Kalmanowitz founded Kaye's on Oct. 1, 1963. About a year ago, when a tenant moved out, Kaye's took over the entire building, enlarging it to 12,500 sq. ft. "We took this opportunity to renovate and make this a state-of-the-art store," Kalmanowitz explained.
