When Steve Hill opened his pharmacy 22 years ago, he must have known he would need to renovate and remerchandise eventually, because he's been on a longtime research mission.

"I'm a pilot, and everywhere I've flown, I've gone into drugstores to see their design and how they're built." Not only did he make mental notes, but he took a tape measure along. He laughed, "I measured stuff people didn't even know I was measuring."

He said there have been about 50 different drugstores that had things he liked. So he took his favorite ideas to a store designer, who added his own ideas, and they went to work, enlarging the store from 5,000 to 7,500 sq. ft. Most critical, he said, in order to remain competitive with the chains, Hill added a complete DME showroom. He ticks off his new features: "We have a bathroom display with a tile floor, a bathtub, and a commode, with handicap items attached to those things. We have a bedroom display with a wood floor made to look just like a patient's room at home, complete with hospital bed and lift chairs. …
