Junior is a mixed-race 10-year-old, living with his mum, Marta, in one of a series of crumbling, hulking apartment blocks in Caracas. Her partner's dead, she recently lost her job as a security guard, and money is short. Junior is about to go to secondary school, and has only one friend, a girl of his own age. The kids' big concern is the photo they each need to have for their new school. He wants to look like a popular crooner, with straightened hair and a shiny suit, which upsets his mother bigtime. She thinks Junior is acting gay.

He's not interested in the neighbourhood kids' breakdancing and they mock him for wandering about with a girl. Marta bans him going to a local coffee stall, run by an older boy who tolerates him hanging around. …
