George Marshall, founder of the Climate Outreach and Information Network, is well-placed to ask why we are doing so little to combat climate change. Marshall's argument - already raising hackles in the environmental community - is that our brains are 'hardwired' by evolution to prioritize immediate and proximate threats and downplay or discount those that are more distant or long-term. Thus, despite the fact that most of us recognize climate change as real, we are predisposed to ignore it as a personal threat and disinclined to pressurize our leaders to tackle the causes of global warming.
