TIPS FROM OUT TEAM

PRO TIP

Bright spots

How do you make the most of the dormant season in the garden? "Accessorize," says Molly Wood, an Orange County-based garden designer and shop owner. Her go-to pieces: green and blue glass floats (used in Japan to keep fishing nets buoyant). "They catch the sun or drops of moisture beautifully, and they're not anywhere close to as fragile as they sound," Wood says. Place a larger one next to a boxwood, or a collection of smaller ones in a bowl on a table. From $22; mollywoodgardendesign.com.

EASY UPGRADE

Terra-cotta goes glam

For years, we've been ignoring a stack of pots in the corner of our Test Garden shed. But with an easy application of gold leaf (available at any art-supply store), we gave our tired terra-cotta a second life. Just apply a spray-on adhesive and place the gold leaf directly on the pot, pressing it down with your thumb. Pull back the waxed layer and seal again.
