'American Sniper*

From the claustrophobic back streets of Iraqi cities to sweeping vistas over that country's landscapes, the re-creations make viewers feel like they're there. Some may quibble with the film's social implications, but its below-the-line aspects are unassailable.

'Exodus: Gods and Kings'

The swords-and-sandals biblical epic brings to life the intricate furniture, luxurious palaces and imposing monuments of ancient Egypt in glorious 3D. A true feast for the eyes.
