One of my favorite groups of people to teach is senior citizens. They are always eager to learn, particularly about technology and its uses, and they manage to be very sociable at the same time. Most come into my classes with very little computer experience, so I always start them out with the basics.

During one class, I was explaining how to use a mouse. Thinking this was an easy task, I quickly showed the students how the movement of the pointer on the screen correlates to the movement of the mouse. "Moving the mouse to the left moves the pointer to the left. Moving the mouse to the right moves the pointer to the right. And, the same goes for up and down." I then let them experiment a little.

After five minutes or so, one student let out an exasperated sigh, and exclaimed, "I just can't get these newfangled devices to work." Quickly, his fellow students encouraged him to keep trying-if they could do it he could. …
