Eastern Region

The Eastern Region board met on 26 September faced with a very full agenda. Dick Bridges reported that he and Mike Sullivan had manned the Institute stand at a Police EQFM conference at Cambridge. The 1998 programme was reviewed and all the events had achieved varying degrees of success.

The programme for 1999 was discussed. Those at the top of the list and under `starters orders' were a Thames Sailing Barge scheduled for Thames and London waters, with the possibility, if demand was justified, to repeat the 1998 social event on the rivers Orwell and Stour - from Ipswich taking in Felixstowe and Harwich areas.

Also highly favoured was an update on `current business tools' as practiced by a well known reputable consulting firm and small enterprises export strategy as practiced by a small but progressive brewer at Bungay, Suffolk.

A Business Excellence seminar or evening presentation on 'Benchmarking' was also proposed. Other possibilities are a joint meeting with the Institute of Management, visits to Lotus Cars and/or Sanyo Industries, Ford Research and Development at Dunton, Perkins Engines at Peterborough, Heathrow Terminal 5, and the Financial Times print run at West Ferry Printers at Canary Wharf. Contact has also been made with the management book publishing side of the Financial Times.

Harry Downes, Council of Management delegate to the region reported on the results of the recent council elections and the current main Institute initiatives - the Edinburgh World Productivity Congress and the Royal Charter. …
