Making Musical Miracles

When the Ying quartet's new first violinist Ayano Ninomiya told me in 2013 that their next CD would be Schumann's three quartets, she described the music as "intricate and strange.

"We started by playing them slowly," she said when I asked her how they were preparing, "unraveling them in real time, taking apart the voices, figuring out what Schumann really meant by looking at the score.

"With Schumann, it's such an elusive question," she added, "We were always thinking, 'What did he really mean?'"

The result of that preparation and thinking is music making in which Schumann's quicksilver musical inspirations and deep emotional swings are united in a persuasive narrative flow marked occasionally by dramatic rhetorical gestures. …
