In Larry Kramer's "The Normal Heart" we relive the unforgivable destruction of the gay community during the AIDS epidemic in the early '80s. In one of the opening scenes there is a big party on Fire Island that our hero. Ned Weeks, played beautifully by Mark Ruffalo. watches at a safe distance. The filmmakers hold on Ned's face as we see the world through his eyes. Poignantly, the film ends in much the same way. in a tight close-up of Ned... watching. We. the audience, feel we have come full circle with him. battling a disease and the homophobia that accompanied it. Adam Penn does not cut away from performances that keep us riveted, whether it is a character raging about not getting the research money she deserves or another seething in emotional pain. …
