Record exec feted with Vanguard Award for his game-changing ways By Malina Saval

"I've always prided myself in being I on the front lines of music to show -Lthat there is no color line," says Clive Davis, the legendary music mogul and this year's recipient of the NAACP Vanguard award, which will be presented at the NAACP Image Awards held Feb. 6 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Past recipients of the award, which, per NAACP prez Cornell William Brooks, recognizes "game-changers who are willing to push the envelope and are not afraid to challenge the status quo," include George Lucas and Aretha Franklin.

"I never knew a color line when I approached Whitney Houston's records and was her creative partner," says Davis. "And when Puffy (Sean Combs) had his dream that top 40 mainstream music would incorporate his artists like Notorious BIG or Mase or himself, I worked with him, shoulder to shoulder, to break down that barrier. …
