On the afternoon of June 5, 1951 Rosemary Clooney walked into Columbia Recording Studio A on 52nd St in New York and was not in a good mood. She was set to record a song that she hated. When initially presented to her by kingpin hit maker Mitch Miller Clooney's response was immediate and visceral. I won't record that and I won't show up for the date.

She was also approaching the two year anniversary of her recording debut with Columbia in June of 1949 and none of the 53 records she had made since then had produced a hit. Those years were the apex of the novelty record era and most of the output consisted of one attempt after another with material that was nowhere near what the artist in her was hoping to work with. Even three unsuccessful duets were done with the then down and out Frank Sinatra that yielded nothing but annoying ditties both Rosie and FS wanted to forget. Prior to the initiation of her Columbia Records contract she had also more than paid her dues. Grinding out one nighters with her sister Betty for three years as the girl singers in the Tony Pastor band, making 30 records along the way.

Not a hit to be found though.

Mitch Miller made it clear that there was no choice, she shows up or she is fired. …
