This is a thought provoking book just by reading the title, To make the statement that discography would be more important than the music it documents is a bold statement indeed. However, I am sure this is exactly what the author had in mind, that is, to get the reader to think in terms of just how important it is to research the history of the music and then accurately document it. He goes to great length to show the various levels of scholarship in this field. Mr. Epperson spells out the shortcomings as well as the virtues of many publications. He also lists detailed notes and bibliography to make his points.

I may not be an authority on discography but I am now very aware just how many problems there are in getting as complete a picture of jazz recordings not only in the past but in some cases even in more modern times. Prior to reading this book I had no real perspective and it is this reason that I flnd the book quite valuable.

The book also goes into great length to look at various types of discographies. Examples of a more generalized publication would be Jepsen's effort or Brian Rust and then the more specialized efforts by artist. …
