George Cables continues to perform at a high level and at the age of 68 he is still growing musically. This is the best recording he has ever made and he has been on a few in his day, well over 200. That is a strong statement to make when one has not heard everything he recorded but maybe I should modify that by saying it is the best I ever heard and I've heard a few going back to the late 1960s. Art Pepper described him as "Mr. Beautiful" and others have raved about his work both as leader and sideman. On this particular recording he brings on board a new bass player for his trio, Dezron Douglas. Mr. Douglas is a Hartford, CT native whose mentor is Jackie McLean. He attended Hartt School of Music. Now teaches as well as performing and one feature he emphasizes is to understand the emotion behind the music and have the ability to replicate that to the song. …
