An interesting set of tunes all composed by Rodriguez based on (I assume) Spanish themes. Perhaps the most interesting part of this album is that it was produced by Quincy Jones, who clearly thinks highly of this performer. The pieces themselves are spiced with a creative (and rhythmic) use of dissonance and a propulsive but unpredictable rhythm.

Two piano solos ("April" and "Crossing the Border") show Rodriguez to possess both an ample technique and an approach to his music that holds composition in equal measure with improvisation. …
