Born January 23, 1931 in Belmont, N.C., he was the son of Buford and Lola Norwood. He was a child prodigy, teaching himself to read at 4 years old. He spent his teenage years working in the textile mills of Belmont, helping to put himself through college. After graduating from high school, he attended High Point University. He married Shirley Wood of Fayetteville and then joined the Army, moving to Germany for a year and a half. After a short teaching stint back in the states, Doug was hired by Pilot Life Insurance Company in Greensboro as an actuarial analyst, until retirement in 1997. He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Jamestown.

Doug was a lifelong jazz enthusiast, collecting and trading thousands of records and CDs. He belonged to the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors, has written articles for their magazine, and has traveled to numerous jazz festivals. …
