Cash-paying customers are still out there, but search for themdon't just wait for them to come in, advised Donnie Calhoun, who has used the profits from those who pay directly to go from one to four stores and two durable medical equipment (DME) facilities in Anniston, Ala. "Cash-paying customers can really be found anywhere," Calhoun told an educational session at the National Community Pharmacists Association annual meeting, which was held in St. Louis last month.

City and county correctional officials had been dealing with 10-12 different pharmacies for the prescription needs as they came up for the people under arrest. When the city manager, a customer of Calhoun's, asked if he could help him with something less complicated, they came up with a plan under which the eight independents in the county bid to fill prescriptions and DME on a rotating basis and bill monthly.

Calhoun also sends the city government a monthly bill for the prescription needs of its retired employees. …
