Joann Waki Muna, SHRM-SCP HR administrator, Guam Community College

Like many, Joann Waki Muna became interested in HR by accident. During college, she worked as an administrative assistant with the Guam Department of Labor, where she first came into contact with HR.

After graduation, she landed a position as an employee development specialist. She loved the job and set a goal of running an HR department herself one day, which she has now accomplished.

For more than 10 years, she has volunteered with SHRM Guam, the local chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), serving in several positions, including chapter president. Currently, she is state director of SHRM's Pacific Council, overseeing Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. She also supports SHRM's student chapter in Guam and is involved with the Guam Women's Chamber of Commerce.

She hopes to continue giving back to HR professionals on the island for as long as possible. "\ love my island of Guam, and I love HR," she says. …
