Tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan was one of the rare talents of his era who felt equally at home in a hard bop context and in the freer environment of a Charles Mingus sextet alongside Eric Dolphy. As a leader, between 1957 and 1966 Jordan recorded for Blue Note, Riverside and its Jazzland subsidiary, and Atlantic and its Vortex imprint. His ambition extended to producing a series of recordings in the late Sixties that were eventually issued by Strata-East, an artists cooperative started by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell in 1971. The two Jordan works bookend albums by Pharaoh Sanders, Cecil Payne, and Charles Brackeen in a 6-disc Mosaic boxed set that also includes sessions led by Ed Blackwell and Wilbur Ware that were unreleased at the time. The Blackwell session is issued here for the very first time, while the Ware material sat on the shelf until 2012 when it was released by the Wilbur Ware Institute. Remarkably enough, this is the first set in Mosaic's 30-year history to feature all original material. …
