Dennis Steele, ARMY magazine's senior writer and a talented photojournalist, died Nov. 21, 2014, as this issue was being completed.

The 61-year-old McKinney, Texas, native spent 16 years in the Army as a journalist and broadcast journalist, rising to the rank of sergeant first class before his 1988 discharge. He immediately launched a new career as a writer, photographer and combat correspondent for ARMY magazine, covering soldier-related stories around the globe.

This issue includes several of his photographs, including images from the war in Iraq and AUSA's Annual Meeting and Exhibition, which proved to be his final assignment.

In his memory, we are renaming our annual photography contest for him. Henceforth, it will be known as the ARMY Magazine SFC Dennis Steele Photo Contest.
