Wolfgang Kubin ... , born December 17, 1945, in Celle, Germany, is one of the most well-known sinologists in Europe. He is also Europe's most prolific translator of Chinese literature, having translated more than one hundred volumes. He has authored and edited numerous volumes of scholarship, criticism, and poetry. A graduate of the Gymnasium Dionysianum in Rheine with a concentration in classical languages, Kubin went on to study Protestant theology at the University of Münster plus Japanology and Classical Chinese at the University of Vienna before studying sinology, philosophy, and German literature at the Ruhr University in Bochum, where he wrote his doctoral dissertation on the poetry of Du Mu ... . Kubin lectured at the Institute of East Asian Studies of the Free University of Berlin from 1977 to 1985, after which he became Professor of Modern Chinese at the Institute for Oriental and Asian Studies from 1985 to 1995, and later Professor of Classical Chinese Sinology at the Faculty for Philosophy from 1995 to 2011, both at Bonn University. …
