Excalibur Announces Agreement with Encyclopedia Britannica

Excalibur Technologies, a provider of knowledge retrieval and media asset management solutions, has announced an agreement with Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. Under the agreement, Excalibur RetrievalWare WebExpress, Excalibur's new off-the-shelf solution developed specifically for online applications, will power Britannica Online and eBLAST, Britannica's Web navigation service.

Excalibur says its RetrievalWare WebExpress will provide highly advanced search and retrieval to users of Britannica online. In addition to the complete text of the current Encyclopaedia Britannica, Britannica Online features 7,000 additional articles; 12,000 illustrations, maps, flags, and pictures; along with tens of thousands of related Web links and interactive features developed by Britannica's editors and producers.

According to the announcement, eBLAST is a new search service designed to help users find high-quality information easily on the Internet and to bring context, structure, and a distinctive editorial voice to the Web. eBLAST contains more than 130,000 sites selected by Britannica editors, with clear, unbiased site descriptions and ratings to help users make informed site selections. Excalibur Retrieval Ware WebExpress will enable eBLAST users to quickly locate relevant and appropriate Web sites based on their preferences.
