"Recently I visited The Academy of St. Matthias the Apostle in Lanham, Maryland.

As I walked the halls and visited classrooms with Principal Abigail Greer, I was struck by the community of learners that I observed and with whom I interacted. It was clear that students were highly engaged with one another as well as the talented faculty and staff of the school. The shared commitment of the faculty and staff to excellence and the desire to meet each student on their individual learning continuum was evident in every facet of the school's program.

I was struck by the cultural and socioeconomic diversity of the school's student body. In so many ways, the school's student body represented the diversity of the community that surrounds this parish school, but also our larger world. St. Matthias clearly represents the diversity of our Catholic church as well.

The students and staff at St. Matthias understand what it means to be Christ for others in both word and deed. At St Matthias, faith and knowledge intersect and faith is truly put into action. Students demonstrate goodness and kindness to one another and their teachers. St. Matthias the Apostle is a school that embraced the responsive classroom approach a number of years ago. This approach has helped foster a strong community among the many diverse learners at the school. The fruits of this shared approach was evident
