Comcast Decision Could Unleash New Merger Wave

Buckle your seatbelts. Comcast's decision to dump its proposed $45.2 billion takeover of Time Warner Cable promises to send the marketplace for cable and broadband M&A activity into a tizzy for the foreseeable future.

As soon as the word surfaced of Comcast's retreat, speculation began about potential new combinations. Would Charter Communications begin the hunt anew for TW Cable? Would TW Cable try to buy its New York-area neighbor, Cablevision? What about Cox Communications? Maybe Comcast will try to bolster its wireless reach by scooping up T-Mobile. And then there's the government's pending review of the proposed AT&T-DirecTV merger.
