Plan for Queen's Speech

Council leaders from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland came together to urge whoever wins the general election to set out a plan to devolve power in the Queen's Speech. In a joint statement, leaders of the local government organisations of the four nations said urgent action is needed to revive local democracy which, with empowered communities, would be a force for good.


7,000 ask to quit NI civil service

More than 7,000 civil servants in Northern Ireland have applied for the voluntary exit scheme. Finance minister Simon Hamilton said the figure did not reflect final numbers of staff who will leave, as some may not be selected for redundancy and others may change their mind. Expected savings are £26m this year and £88m thereafter.
