THE HIGH ART OF TRANSFORMING OUR BELIEFS ABOUT VIOLENCE

AS MANY WAYS as there are to tell a story in words, there are at least as many to tell it visually-even when the topic is as abstract as the science of peace. PT Creative Director E D LE VIN E felt there were so many different angles from which the article "Battle Tested" could be approached that he commissioned five artists to find their own. "I reached out to people who weren't illustrators but graphic designers," Levine explains. "I wanted single images with poster-like high impact." In addition, to get results that went well beyond the decorative, he deliberately selected artists known to have a strong political sensibility. Designer STEPHEN DOYLE aimed for a visceral reaction to human terror and mercilessness, and their mental opposite, compassion. Old gangster movies in which one of the bad guys carries a violin case that holds a machine gun provided "an opening to the idea of the yin and yang of the human mind," he says. …
