Article excerpt

AWARD RECIPIENTS: Richard Cress and Joseph Fala

he AGO Committee on Continuing Professional Education has awarded the 2015-16 Ronald G. Pogorzelski and Lester D. Yankee Memorial Scholarship Awards to Richard Gress and Joseph (Joey) Fala. This fall, Gress will enter Mercer University as a freshman studying organ performance; Fala will enter the Yale Institute of Sacred Music.

The Pogorzelski-Yankee scholarships are intended to support the education of young organists in financing their collegiate applied organ degree programs. In particular, the applicant's achievement and level of commitment to the organ should indicate a strong likelihood that he or she shall forge a professional career in the fields of organ playing and/or sacred music upon graduation. Each year, the Committee on Continuing Professional Education reviews all applications with the intent of conveying an award for one entering freshman as well as for one firstyear graduate student. The total financial benefit of each award is $30,000, which is distributed over a four-year undergraduate program or over a two-year graduate program. Once an award is made, each scholarship is reviewed and renewed whenever scholastic requirements for the award continue to be met. The Pogorzelski-Yankee scholarships presently support six different collegiate organ students ranging from the freshman college level to the second year of graduate study.

The Memorial scholarships are made possible by the recent, generous bequest of Messrs. Pogorzelski and Yankee to the AGO. The scholarships are awarded based upon both talent and financial need. Applications for the 2015-16 award were received online from January 1 through February 15, 2015. The Committee on Continuing Professional Education reviewed the applications and made its award determination in late February and early March 2015. …
