This book was written to show the collaboration of jazz music and visual arts, primarily photography. In fact there is little said about graphic arts. The parallels make for some fascinating reading. The period of time covered in this volume runs from the swing era of the 1930s to the 1960s. Quite a bit is written regarding Miles Davis and his relationship with record companies and producers. Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Rollins also receive detailed treatment. The book consists of five chapters plus a coda, notes and an index. The photographs fall into two primary groupings, on location photography and long play album covers with only a few posed studio pictures. I would think that most of the great jazz photographers are mentioned in detail in this book. …
