What we have here is an out and out bebop disc. It came about when Charles McPherson came to Denver, CO to do a clinic at a local high School where Keith Oxman was a music teacher. They had not played together until that time. The gig at the school was such a success that a record session ensued and a local rhythm section was enlisted. Chip Stephens, Ken Walker and Todd Reid are all top notch musicians. I would suspect all three are first call players. One would think that this group worked together for years but then isn't that the miracle of jazz? Excellent players have good ears and become a tight knit group very quickly.

McPherson is now 75 years old but plays like a person half his age. He grew up in Detroit at the height of the jazz activity in that city. Barry Harris became his mentor. He followed many of those musicians to New York City in 1959. …
